Seminar Description

The design load combinations in Section 1605 of the IBC and the load combinations with overstrength factor in ASCE 7 Section 12.4 are known to cause a lot of confusion among code users. This web seminar is aimed at removing that confusion by explaining the strength design, the basic allowable stress design (ASD), and the alternative basic ASD load combinations in Section 1605 of the IBC. The equivalency or lack thereof among the three sets of load combinations is discussed as well as advantages of using one method over another. It is pointed out that IBC Section 1605 requires the use of the load combinations with overstrength factor in Section 12.4 in certain situations. These situations and the load combinations with overstrength factor themselves are explained. Changes in design load combinations from the 2015 to the 2018 IBC are described and discussed. Numerical examples are given of combining load effects using the load combinations in IBC Section 1605 and ASCE 7 Section 12.4.

The views and opinions expressed in this seminar are those of the speaker(s) and do not necessarily reflect those held by S. K. Ghosh Associates LLC.

Speaker Bio

Dr. S. K. Ghosh is known internationally for his work in earthquake engineering. He has influenced seismic design provisions in the United States for many years by serving on or chairing numerous committees and advisory panels. He specializes in the analysis and design, including wind and earthquake resistant design, of reinforced and prestressed concrete structures. Dr. Ghosh is active on many national technical committees and is a fellow of ASCE, SEI, ACI, and PCI. He is a member of ACI Committee 318, Standard Building Code, and the ASCE 7 Standard Committee (Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures). He is a former member of the Boards of Direction of the Building Seismic Safety Council (BSSC), the American Concrete Institute (ACI), and the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI). In addition to authoring many publications in the area of structural design, he has investigated and reported on structural performance in recent earthquakes.

Pro Dasgupta is a registered civil engineer in the State of California. He has been with S. K. Ghosh Associates LLC in Palatine, IL since 2005 and has been actively engaged in building code interpretation and development of code support literature. He has co-authored a number of publications including Seismic Design Using Structural Dynamics, Significant Changes to the Seismic Load Provisions of ASCE 7-10: An Illustrated Guide and 2009 IBC Seismic and Wind Design of Concrete Buildings. He leads the development and maintenance of all computer programs produced by SKGA.
