Seminar Description

Steel moment frames are commonly used for the lateral force resisting system in buildings. This seminar discusses the evolution of moment frame design in the past 20 years, some current challenges, and recent innovations in steel moment frame design.

In the past 20 years, design provisions for moment frames have been stable but design practice has changed dramatically. The major shifts in moment connection design practice are: the use of deeper column shapes; the use of field-bolted, rather than field-welded connections; and the use of proprietary connections in AISC 358-22. The seminar will explain the reasons behind these shifts.

In recent years, engineers have been focusing more on moment frame optimization and functional recovery after earthquakes. Optimization of moment frames to minimize cost is time-consuming. Current software tools enable manual iteration but do not have fully-automated optimization. With regards to functional recovery, current code-compliant steel special moment frames will experience damage during severe earthquakes which may result in building demolition. There is growing consensus that this poor functional recovery is unacceptable. In the past five years, there have been innovations in moment frame design that address these challenges.

Speaker Bio

Dr. Paul Richards received his PhD from the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) and spent 13 years as an assistant/associate professor at Brigham Young University (BYU) with a research focus on seismic design of steel frames. He is currently Vice President of Research and Development at DuraFuse Frames. Dr. Richards is the author of two books and regular journal articles on steel frame design. He is a member of the AISC Technical Committee responsible for seismic design provisions for steel frames (TC-9).
