This web seminar will cover the design of masonry shear walls using the strength design method. The seminar will primarily focus on design of shear walls in accordance with the 2016 TMS 402 Code. Advantages of strength design vs. allowable stress design will be shown. Provisions for special reinforced masonry shear walls will also be discussed and the benefits and advantages of using this system will be highlighted. Maximum reinforcement provisions will be covered in detail. The shear friction provisions that were added in the 2016 TMS 402 code will also be presented.
Richard Bennett, Ph.D, P.E. is a Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Tennessee. He is a Fellow of The Masonry Society. He is a member of ASTM C12 on Mortars and Grouts for Unit Masonry, and ASTM C15 on Manufactured Masonry Units. Dr. Bennett has been very active in the TMS 402 Building Code Requirements for Masonry Structures Committee. He has chaired the Flexural, Axial Loads, and Shear subcommittee and served as the vice-chair of the 2013 Main Committee. Dr. Bennett was the chair of the Main Committee for the 2016 402/602 code. He is currently 2nd vice chair for the 2022 code committee.
