Special Seismic Certification made its first appearance in the 2000 International Building Code, however it was not commonly enforced until California’s OSHPD agency started mandating seismic testing of equipment for hospitals after the adoption of the 2007 California Building Code. Today in Seismic Design Category C structures and above, all life safety systems and hazardous material storage require seismic certification as do most building equipment in Occupancy Category IV structures. Seismic certification is also required in electrical substations, nuclear facilities, and telecom equipment.
Andy Coughlin is the director of TRU Compliance, the product certification arm of Structural Integrity Associates, focused primarily on the seismic and wind performance of critical equipment in the healthcare, electrical generation and distribution, and critical utility sectors. TRU Compliance, formerly part of Tobolski Watkins Engineering, has tested over 800 components, certified over 25,000 individual products, and completed over 100 OSHPD OSP certification programs. Andy holds a master’s degree from Penn State University, a bachelor’s degree from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, and is a license structural engineer in the State of California.
