Seminar Description

The 2019 California Building Code (2019 CBC), which is based on the 2018 International Building Code (2018 IBC), is going to be adopted in the State of California effective January 1, 2020. With the 2019 CBC/2018 IBC comes a set of updated structural reference standards – for design loads, structural steel, masonry, wood, and cold-formed steel. The reference standard for concrete, ACI 318-14, remains unchanged. Also remaining unchanged is the 2015 edition of the wood standard: Special Design Provisions for Wind and Seismic.

The most important changes in the structural provisions of the 2019 CBC/2018 IBC result from the referenced standard for design loads being updated from ASCE 7-10 (including Supplement No. 1) to ASCE 7-16. The design wind speed maps as well as the maps for seismic ground motion parameters have changed, along with many other important aspects of design.

It is vitally important that every structural engineer in California be well aware of the major changes that have taken place in the structural provisions of the 2019 CBC/2018 IBC as well as in the various updated referenced standards before the new code goes into effect on January 1st. In order to help engineers transition to the new building code, S. K. Ghosh Associates LLC is pleased to present a series of full-day seminars at various locations in California. Sign up today to reserve your seat.

Lunch and refreshment will be provided in addition to a printed workbook containing the seminar material.
Note regarding seminar content: The California state agency amendments to the 2018 IBC, that are captured in the A chapters of the 2019 CBC, will not be covered in this seminar because of time limitations and also due to their limited application to the majority of projects. For those interested in these amendments, SKGA will offer a web seminar dedicated to a discussion of those amendments later this year.

Speaker Bio

Dr. S. K. Ghosh is known internationally for his work in earthquake engineering. He has influenced seismic design provisions in the United States for many years by serving on or chairing numerous committees and advisory panels. He specializes in the analysis and design, including wind and earthquake resistant design, of reinforced and prestressed concrete structures. Dr. Ghosh is active on many national technical committees and is a fellow of ASCE, SEI, ACI, and PCI. He is a member of ACI Committee 318, Standard Building Code, and the ASCE 7 Standard Committee (Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures). He is a former member of the Boards of Direction of the Building Seismic Safety Council (BSSC), the American Concrete Institute (ACI), and the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI). In addition to authoring many publications in the area of structural design, he has investigated and reported on structural performance in recent earthquakes.

Kirsten Zeydel is a Structural Consultant with S.K. Ghosh Associates, the Structural Engineering Manager for EIG Building Components, and the President of ZO Consulting. She is a licensed Structural Engineer, based in Southern California, with over sixteen years of experience in the design of cold-formed steel framing. She has led the structural design of both exterior and interior non-load-bearing cold-formed framing in addition to the structural design of load-bearing cold-formed steel buildings up to 5-stories in height. She has successfully taken many projects through the rigorous California Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development and the California Division of the State Architect. In practice, Kirsten Zeydel specializes in the design and coordination of exterior building “skins” in order to ensure they perform as expected during earthquakes and wind events.

Ms. Kelly Cobeen is an Associate Principal with Wiss Janney Elstner Associates and registered Civil and Structural Engineer. She has twenty-nine years of experience working in a wide range of project types, sizes and construction materials. She has a special interest in seismic resistance of light-frame construction, applicable to new construction and seismic retrofit of existing buildings. Ms. Cobeen has been involved in numerous code development, research and educational activities. Code development activities include involvement in the NEHRP Recommended Provisions for Seismic Regulations for New Buildings, in numerous Applied Technology Council publications, and International Building Code and International Residential Code development. Educational activities include coauthoring the Design of Wood Structures textbook, teaching wood design at UC Berkeley and seminars for professional organizations. Research activities include involvement in the CUREE-Caltech Woodframe Project, studying improved seismic performance for woodframe buildings.
