Do you have the first, second or third printing of ASCE 7-10? It matters!

Posted Date: 10 Oct 2014

Whether you have the first, second, or third printing of ASCE 7-10, you’ll need to have done something, or you’ll need to do something.  Let us explain…

International Building CodeFirst printing.  If you have the first printing of ASCE 7-10, you probably purchased it in 2010 or 2011.   There have been two errata published by ASCE since the first printing, one dated January 11, 2011 and one dated March 31, 2013.  Both of these errata need to be incorporated into your first printing.  Also, you will want to download the expanded seismic commentary. When designing projects in accordance with the 2015 IBC, you will need to incorporate Supplement No. 1 with your first printing.

[January 11, 2011 Errata]

[March 31, 2013 Errata]

[Expanded Seismic Commentary]

[Supplement No. 1]

International Building CodeSecond printing.   If you have the second printing of ASCE 7-10, you probably purchased it sometime between 2010 and 2014. There has been one errata published by ASCE since the second printing dated March 31, 2013. This errata needs to be incorporated into your second printing.  Also, you will want to download the expanded seismic commentary.  When designing projects in accordance with the 2015 IBC, you will need to incorporate Supplement No. 1 with your first printing.

[March 31, 2013 Errata]

[Expanded Seismic Commentary]

[Supplement No. 1]

International Building CodeThird printing of ASCE 7-10.   If you have the third printing of ASCE 7-10, you purchased it between October 2013 and now.  There are no errata to incorporate and you don’t need to download the expanded seismic commentary, because it is already incorporated in your third printing. The complication with the third printing is that it incorporates Supplement No. 1, which is adopted by the 2015 IBC, but not the 2012 IBC.  The provisions in Supplement No. 1 are not readily identifiable in any way in the third printing, which is a bit problematic.  The only way you know what portions of the third printing are a part of the supplement is by looking at the 17 page long Supplement No. 1.

[Supplement No. 1]

Q: How do I know that Supplement No. 1 is adopted by the 2015 IBC, but not the 2012 IBC?

A: The answer is in Chapter 35.  ASCE 7-10 is referenced in 2012 IBC Chapter 35, whereas, ASCE 7-10 including Supplement No. 1 is referenced in 2015 IBC Chapter 35.
