This presentation will explore how engineers can use the alternate design provisions for anchored masonry veneers in TMS 402 to go beyond the limitations of prescriptive design. We will review the behavior of anchored veneers, discuss methods for engineering anchored veneers, and then demonstrate these methods with design examples.

John M. Hochwalt has been a consulting engineer for over 30 years and is Director of Engineering for the Seattle Structural Group of KPFF. He is co-author of the Reinforced Masonry Engineering Handbook, and is active in the code development process through his work with TMS-402 committee where he is the chair of the Seismic and Limit Design Subcommittee.
