Seminar Description

This four-part course will discuss the major changes in the structural provisions of the 2018 IBC and ASCE 7-16. For the changes in the 2018 IBC, subjects covered include substantive revisions to structural-related Chapters 16-23. Many of the changes in Chapter 16 result from a change in the referenced standard for design loads from ASCE 7-10 including Supplement No. 1 to ASCE 7-16. The changes in other structural chapters result largely from changes in the referenced material standards such as AISC 360 and AISC 341.

Changes from ASCE 7-10 to ASCE 7-16 are many and their impact will be far-reaching. The title of the standard will change to Minimum Design Loads and Associated Criteria for buildings and other structures. A major chapter on design for tsunami loads has been added. There will a new Appendix E on fire resistance. The seismic ground motion maps have changed again and rather significantly. The site coefficients by which mapped ground motion is modified are going to be quite different. The two changes together will have a major impact on seismic design. There are other major changes in the seismic chapters including many altered or new provisions for nonstructural components and nonbuilding structures. There are also major changes in the snow chapter and the wind chapter. The design wind speed maps will be quite different from the maps in ASCE 7-10. This seminar will introduce the major changes to attendees and will explain the changes and discuss their impact.

There will be an opportunity for participants to ask questions. This seminar is designed to provide a great introduction to the 2018 IBC and ASCE 7-16, and assist the code user in making an eventual transition to the new codes.

Speaker Bio

Dr. S. K. Ghosh is known internationally for his work in earthquake engineering. He has influenced seismic design provisions in the United States for many years by serving on or chairing numerous committees and advisory panels. He specializes in the analysis and design, including wind and earthquake resistant design, of reinforced and prestressed concrete structures. Dr. Ghosh is active on many national technical committees and is a fellow of ASCE, SEI, ACI, and PCI. He is a member of ACI Committee 318, Standard Building Code, and the ASCE 7 Standard Committee (Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures). He is a former member of the Boards of Direction of the Building Seismic Safety Council (BSSC), the American Concrete Institute (ACI), and the Earthquake Engineering Research Institute (EERI). In addition to authoring many publications in the area of structural design, he has investigated and reported on structural performance in recent earthquakes.
