Anchorage to Concrete: Is a Solution in Sight? SKGA WEB SEMINAR Speaker: Dr. S. K. Ghosh The 2006 International Building Code (IBC) requires anchors cast in concrete and post-installed mechanical anchors to be designed by Appendix D to ACI 318-05 if the design load combinations include earthquake loads or effects. Seismic design of anchors by Appendix D poses significant challenges to the designer, primarily because ductile anchor failure must precede any concrete failure . Changes made to Appendix D in the 2008 edition of ACI 318, referenced by the 2009 IBC, make these challenges tougher in one respect, but are helpful in other respects. This web seminar is dedicated to a thorough discussion of these changes and their impact on anchor design. A modification to ACI 318-08, exempting certain anchors used to attach wood sill plates from Appendix D requirements, has been approved on a preliminary basis for inclusion in the 2012 IBC. This change, initiated by the National Council of Structural Engineers Associations (NCSEA) and the Structural Engineers Association of California (SEAOC) and based on testing, will also be discussed.
