E. V. Leyendecker, Ph.D., Principal Seismological Consultant

Dr. E. V. Leyendecker joined S. K. Ghosh Associates Inc. as Principal Seismological Consultant on March 13, 2006. His expertise and abilities provide a major boost to SKGA's seismic and building code consulting practice nationally and internationally. Dr. Leyendecker will operate out of his office in Golden, CO.

Dr. Leyendecker, Scientist Emeritus at U.S. Geological Survey, completed his 40-year career with the federal government in various capacities in March 2006. For 20 of those years he was a Research Civil Engineer with the United States Geological Survey (USGS) where he led research efforts in seismic design criteria for buildings, application of seismic hazard mapping in building codes and standards, and acquisition and analysis of earthquake damage data from national and international earthquakes. He has B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Civil Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin.

Prior to joining the USGS he was a Research Structural Engineer with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) for 17 years. There he led the structural engineering group and later the earthquake engineering group. Research efforts included studies in progressive collapse of structures, reinforced concrete, masonry, investigation of structural failures, and improvement of building codes.

Field investigations of structural failures, such as the Hyatt Regency walkways collapse, and earthquake damage from events such as the 1971 San Fernando Earthquake and the 1985 Mexico City Earthquake led to his strong career interest to apply research results in improving codes and standards. He played a major role in using USGS hazard mapping research to develop the design maps that are included in the International Building Code and ASCE 7.
